Full Moon Party on Haad Rin beach, Koh Phangan ??
Full Moon Party happens once every month, when the moon shows its full face to Earth.
If you’re looking for a Full Moon Party, one place where you will find one is Hat Rin (Haad Rin) – a town and beach area on the famous island of Koh Pha-Ngan.
Hat Rin (Haad Rin) is far from the quietest beaches in Koh Pha-Ngna. It’s atmosphere is lively with a mixture of different music, bars, shops and tattoo parlors.
Partying travellers from all over the world attend the full moon party. Different music can be heard, everything from EDM to Reggae. People dress in bright colours and cover themselves in neon paint and dance all night long. During the rest of the month the beach is a lot quieter, however you still can hardly call it deserted.
More about Hat Rin (Haad Rin) beach
Hat Rin (Haad Rin) is located on the Southern tip of Koh Pha-Ngan. It has two main beaches – Sunset Beach to the south and Sunrise Beach to the north. The full moon party takes place on the Sunrise Beach. In-between the two beaches is the whole tourist infrastructure of the town. There you will find all of the hotels, shops, bars and all the rest. The width of the peninsula is relatively small, so you can walk from one side to the other in about 15 minutes.
When you’re booking accomodation, keep in mind the side that it’s on. If you enjoy beautiful sunsets, find a place to stay on the South side. Gorgeous surises can be watched from the North.
Full Moon Party
The tradition began in the 1980’s, originating in Hat Rin (Haad Rin) on the island of Koh Pha-Ngan. A group of friends who were travelling in Thailand found that the most beautiful full moon can be seen from Koh Pha-Ngan. They arranged a party on the beach of Hat Rin (Haad Rin) to celebrate the full moon night with about 20-30 people attending. The party gained fame mostly through word of mouth and since then has become one of the biggest party events in Thailand, drawing crowds of 10-30000 people each month.
Flocks of people start to arrive about a week before the Full Moon Party. You can find the schedule of Full Moon Parties in Koh Pha-Ngan – here. As we mentioned earlier, up to 30000 people from all over the world can be attending the full moon party so it can get pretty noisy. The dress code is simple – whatever you feel comfortable in. You should probably avoid wearing your ‘good clothes’, because it can get pretty messy with neon paint. Most people just wear shorts and t-shirts or vests. The rule here seems to be ‘the brighter, the better’. Neon paint is sold in basically every shop in Hat Rin (Haad Rin) and even on the beach itself by some locals.
You can expect a truly amazing atmosphere. Wherever you go, you can hear music of different genres but they all flow harmoniously from one to another. All of the bars in Hat Rin (Haad Rin) sell those huge cocktail buckets. You can ask for any mix you like, whiskey, gin, vodka, etc.
The partying goes on till the morning. If you’ve managed to “over do-it”, there is a secluded sleeping area, which is fenced off with some mats to sleep on.
Safety at the Full Moon Party
You should have as much fun as possible if you’re attending the Full Moon Party. But remember, safety always comes first. Here are a few things to avoid doing. Some of these may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how often they happen to tourists attending the Full Moon Party.
Don’t walk around barefoot, because you can easily step on some broken glass. It’s best to wear some flip flops at least.
Leave all of your valuables. The Full Moon Party is mecca for pickpockets so you could have your stuff stolen without you even realising. Usually taking about 3000 baht with you in enough to buy drinks and some food.
Don’t get involved with drugs. There is usually plenty found there, but Thailand has some of the strictest drug laws in the world. Undercover officers are known to walk around the beach and the dealers are even known to snitch on their customers. Thai jails are no fun.
Don’t abuse alcohol. Those buckets with crazy cocktail combinations are known to take down even the heaviest of heavyweights. If you feel yourself getting too drunk get some water and slow down!
Definitely don’t go in the sea. Not including the possibility of drowning or being hit by one of the boats that come and go all night long bringing people to and from the beach you’re also at risk of swallowing the water that isn’t the cleanest. A lot of people see the sea as a better alternative to using the portaloos.
Don’t play with fire. At the Full Moon Party you can expect to see many different entertainers. The performances are fun to watch, but some of them involve fire and they usually have people from the crowd take part in things like jumping rope that is on fire, jumping over fires and “dragon’s breath”. If you’ve had too many drinks you risk burning yourself.
If you have a motorbike, don’t go on it under the influence. The island is known for people sustaining traffic related injuries.
How to get to Hat Rin (Haad Rin)
You have to make your way to Thong Sala, the ‘capital’ of Koh Pha-Ngan. From there you can get a taxi or ride a motorbike to Hat Rin (Haad Rin), which is only about 7 miles from there. You can also get the boat from Koh Samui. They run frequently, especially on the days near the Full Moon Party.
